Ladakh Union Territory is one of the few places in India where rare high altitude birds, wildlife, mammals, and butterflies can be seen. Birding hotspots in Ladakh include the Indus belt - Spituk, Choglamsar, Shey, Thiksay, and Chushot in and around Leh, as well as Tsokar Lake, Puga Valley, Hanle, Anley, Chushul, Nyoma, Tsaga village The itinerary below has been specially designed for wildlife enthusiasts and birders to see as many birds and wildlife as possible during their trip.
Many rare and endangered high altitude birds can be found in Ladakh, including the Upland Buzzard, Saker Falcon, Little Owl, Eurasian Eagle Owl, Northern Wheater, Tibetan Lark, Tibetan Snowcock, Himalayan Snowcock, Tibetan Partridge, Tibetan Sandgrouse, Golden Eagle, Eurasian Magpie / Black-billed Magpie, Ground Tit / Humme's Ground Pecker, Great Rosefinch, Norther/Common Ravin, Lammergeier, Himalayan Griffon Vulture, Tibetan Snowfinch, Brandt's or Black-headed Snowfinch, Alpine Chough, Red-billed Chough, Robin Accentor, Brown Accentor, Black-throated Accentor, Twite, Chukar Partridge, etc.
Many birders visit Ladakh in order to add some lifer birds to their list. The White-browed Tit Warbler is one of the many species of Birds of Ladakh that birders look for on their Ladakh birding tours with Wild India Journey.
Arrive in Leh and transfer to your hotel Lotus or similar. A full day of rest is required for acclimatization to high altitude.
Leh is 3500 meters above sea level. Guests are advised to take a full day of rest/leisure to acclimate to the high altitude. Meeting with the Birding Tour Guide at the hotel and detailed explanation of the itinerary for the next few days.
Birding from Thiksay to Phey along the Leh-Indus River Belt. Ibisbill, Solitary Snipe, and Eurasian Hobby are among the highlights. After a cup of tea or coffee, take a drive along the Indus River to go bird watching. Breakfast is prepared for a morning birding trip along the Indus River. Lunch will be served at the hotel. After lunch, go bird watching along the Indus River. There will be tea/coffee and snacks available during the Birding. The hotel will provide dinner.
Chang La Pass is 5391 meters above sea level. Drive along the Indus River for birding after a cup of tea or coffee. Breakfast packed for a morning birding trip somewhere along the Indus River. Return to the hotel for lunch. After lunch, drive along the Indus River again for birding. During the Birding, there will be tea/coffee and snacks. Dinner will be served at the hotel.
We will check out for Wari La Pass is situated at an altitude of 5312 Meters. Early drive after a sip of tea or coffee to Wari La Pass. Breakfast packed for a morning birding trip somewhere on route of Wari La Pass. We will ride 20 km more Tangyar village to look for rare species white-browed tit-warbler. After lunch in Tangyar Village will drive to Nubra Valley along with birding enroute. Overnight stay in Nubra Valley at Majestic Meadows or similar.
Drive (147 km) to Pangong Lake (4380 m), passing through Wari La Pass (5370 m) or Shayok (3800m). Highlights include Himalayan Wolf, Blue-Sheep, Ladakh Urial, Finches, and Larks. After an early breakfast and a morning birding walk around the lodge, we will drive north-east along the Shayok River to Pangong Lake. For convenience, I packed a lunch. Arrive at Pangong Lake for dinner and an overnight stay at Martsemik or similar.
Drive (180 km) through Chushul and Tsagala Pass to Hanle* / Anley (4500 m). Highlight The Black-necked Crane, Golden Eagle, Bar-headed Goose, Ruddy Shelduck, White-capped Redstart, and other birds are examples. Drive to Hanle/Anley after an early breakfast via Tsaga La Pass, Loma Bend, Rongo, and Lal Pahari. If an interesting species is spotted and the journey is delayed, bring a packed lunch with you. Arrive at Pangong Lake for dinner and an overnight stay at Hanle House or similar.
Full-day birding and wildlife tour that includes the Kalak Tar Tar plateau (4800 m). Highlights include Tibetan Gazelle, Pala's Cat, and Eurasian Owl, as well as Redfox, Golden Eagle, and Upland Buzzard. The only habitat for Tibetan Gazelles in India is Kalak Tar Tar, and there are only 55-75 Tibetan Gazelles in India. It is approximately 35 kilometres from the Anley Homestay. Anley is at 4350 metres, and Kalak Ter Ter is at 4800 metres. Drive to Kalak Ter Ter platue around 5:00 a.m. after tea or coffee. Breakfast was packed on the way. Return to Homestay for lunch and an evening walk around Astrophysics Hill in search of the elusive Palla's Cat, Golden Eagle, and Eurasian Owl. Dinner will be served at the Homestay. Overnight stay in Hanle.
Tsokar (4600 m) is reached via Puga Valley and Polo kongka La. (4950 m). Highlights include the Tibetan Snowcock, Tibetan Partridge, Himalayan Wolf, Black-necked Crane, Finches, and other birds. Drive along Tsokar Lake via Puga Hotspring Valley after an early breakfast. If an interesting species is spotted and the journey is delayed, bring a packed lunch with you. Arrive in TsoKar after refreshment with tea, will go for birding session around TsoKar village. Overnight stay at TsoKar Resort or smilar.
Drive from TsoKar to Leh (3500 m) via Tanglang La (5330 m). Himalayan Griffon, Saker Falcon, Lammergeier, Golden Eagle, Tibetan Snowcock and White-capped Redstart, Tibetan Wolf, Blue-sheep, and other highlights After an early breakfast, drive to Leh via Taklang La pass, Rumstsey Valley, and Upshi. If an interesting species is spotted and the journey is delayed, bring a packed lunch with you. Arrive in Leh for dinner and an overnight stay at hotel Lotus or similar.
After an early breakfast, transfer to the Leh Kushok Bakula Rinpochey Airport for your flight back home with fond memories of your Ladakh Birding and Wildlife Tour.
