The island nation of Sri Lanka is home to an abundance of animals and is located in a hotspot for biodiversity. Sri Lanka is one of the best places in the world to go whale watching and is home to many rare birds and mammals in its lush mountain rain-forests and lowland forests.

Itinerary

Arrive in Colombo in the evening. After being welcomed, you'll be taken to a hotel for the night.

 Overnight stay at hotel Mandarina Colombo or similar.

In the morning, depart from your accommodation towards Kitulgala. Visit the Kitulgala rain forest the rest of the day. searching for nocturnal and unique wet lowland woodland birds. Moreover, there are butterflies, woodland mammals, and other animals. 

 Overnight stay at hotel Palmstone Retreat or similar.

The neighboring ecosystem and Kitulgala forests throughout the entire day. searching for nocturnal and unique such as Square-tailed Bulbul, Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot, Red-backed Flameback, Loten's Sunbird, Brown-breasted Flycatcher, Orange-billed Babbler, Chestnut-backed Owlet and wet lowland birds. Moreover, there are butterflies, woodland mammals, and other animals.

 Stay over night at hotel Palmstone Retreat or similar.

 

Head to the Sinharaja jungle in the morning. Looking for Layard's parakeet, Ceylon hanging parrot, Ceylon Gray hornbill, Ashy-headed laughing thrush and the Red-faced malkoha, as well as the Brown-capped babbler and the Blue magpie are especially endemics, in the evening in Sinharaja. Moreover, there are butterflies, woodland mammals, and other animals.

Stay over night at hotel Sinharaja Forest Edge or similar.

The Sinharaja rainforest is open all day for birding. Searching for more endemic species are the Sri Lankan wood pigeon, Green billed coucal, Sri Lankan white-headed starling, the Ashy-headed babbler and the Sri Lankan blue magpie. Other hand, Palm forest are good to explore butterflies, woodland mammals, and other animals. 

Stay over night at hotel Sinharaja Forest Edge or similar.

Leave for Embilipitiya in the morning. Visit Udawalawa National Park in the evening to seek for dry woodland, open country, and grassland birds, including several endemics. The park is composed of grassland and forest under arid climate conditions also butterflies, open country and forest mammals, and other wildlife. 

 Stay over night at hotel Jungle Paradise or similar.

Leave for Bundala in the morning and explore Bundala National Park in search of shorebirds and other water birds. Lunch in a Hambantota hotel. Search for shorebirds and other water birds during an afternoon birding excursion in Hambantota at suitable spots.

Stay over night at hotel Jetwing Yala or similar.

Leave towards Nuwara Eliya on the highlands in the morning. Searching for on the wayyellow-eared bulbul and Sri Lankan hill white-eye, Pied thrushes, Indian pitta, Indian blue robin, Blyth’s reed warbler and Kashmir flycatcher.  

Stay over night at hotel Mirage King Cottage or similar.

Horton Plains National Park supports grasslands and dense montane cloud forest. In addition to characteristic flora, a cool and bracing climate plays host to colourful butterflies, wild orchids and almost all of the country’s endemics. Highlights include Sri Lanka blue magpie, dull-blue flycatcher, Sri Lanka junglefowl, whistling thrush, Sri Lanka wood pigeon, Ceylon hill munia, orange-billed babbler, pied bush chat and zitting cisticola. Also present are wild boar, sambar deer, and giant squirrel.  

Stay over night at hotel Mirage King Cottage or similar.

Early departure for Kandy. Botanic gardens visit in the evening. searching for birds in the woodland and moist lowland areas, including several endemics. Moreover, certain animals, butterflies, and other fauna.

Stay over night at hotel Fox Kandy by Fox Resorts or similar.

Early in the morning, search for wet lowland forest birds, including several endemics, in a section of tall wet woodland near Kandy. Moreover, there are butterflies, woodland mammals, and other animals. Leave for the airport after lunch in order to fly out that evening.
