Great Himalayan National Park was established in 1984 and received official notification of its status as a national park in 1999. It can be found in the far Western Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh, India, in the Banjaar Sub-Division of the Kullu District. The extensive array of wildlife sanctuaries in the Himalayan area of India and its neighboring nations has recently expanded to include GHNP.

Under the Animals Protection Act of 1972, it was established to preserve, protect, and breed wildlife. The Great Himalayan National Park is a stunning environment for alpine flora and fauna, hidden within the snow-covered Himalayas.

The Great Himalayan National Park is situated in Himachal Pradesh's Seraj Forest Division, 60 kilometers from Kullu. Great Himalayan National Park, which is surrounded by the Rupi Bhaba Sanctuary, Pin Valley National Park, and Kanwar Wildlife Sanctuary, is situated at an elevation of 1500–6000 m and gives beautiful views of the mountains in its surroundings. A vast 754 sq km area makes up the national park. 256 square kilometers of land were separated from the park in 1994 and designated as a buffer zone or ecozone. There are 160 communities in the Great Himalayan National Park's ecozone.

A wide variety of vegetation, animals, and birds call the park home. The 375 fauna species found in the Great Himalayan National Park include mammals, reptiles, mollusks, insects, and birds. The Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 protects these creatures. Great Himalayan National Park features more than 100 plant varieties, including therapeutic herbs, with a focus on Deodar and Oak trees. The list is extensive and diverse, including junipers, mountain herbs, and pine, chestnut, and spruces.

Wild animals such the brown bear, musk deer, thar, goral, snow leopard, bharal, monal, koklas, Tragopan, tahr, and blue sheep are among those found in the Great Himalayan National Park. Also present are more than 181 different bird species. When animals migrate to lower grounds in September through November, this is the greatest time to see them.

The best months to visit the Great Himalayan National Park in Himachal Pradesh are March, April, May, June, and mid-September, October, and November to enjoy the greatest weather and stunning flora and animals.

Bhuntar in Kullu is around 60 kilometers from the Great Himalayan National Park and is the closest airport. There are a few gravel roads, but no motorable roads that lead directly to the national park. You may get to the park gate from Kullu by either traveling from Gushaini to Ropa in the Tirthan Valley or from Ropa to Shangarh in the Sainj Valley.
